Clarios Selected as a U.S. DOE Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize Winner

Clarios was selected as a winner of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize competition.

Clarios was selected as a winner of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize competition. The Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize seeks to reach DOE’s goal to capture 90 percent of all spent lithium-ion batteries for eventual recycling of critical materials and reintroduction into the supply chain.


Clarios’ project, “Powering the Future,” works with industry partners to develop and apply innovative technologies to identify and separate lithium-ion batteries from lead-acid batteries, ensuring the proper and safe recycling methods for each chemistry. In the third and final phase of the competition, Clarios will validate the concept in pilot programs. 


As the producer of one in three of the world’s car batteries, Clarios is uniquely positioned to facilitate and spearhead the lithium recycling economy. Clarios has established a world-class closed-loop process where up to 99 percent of materials from lead-acid batteries can be recovered and turned into new batteries.


“This is a natural expansion of our commitment to drive the best in a closed-loop economy, regardless of the battery chemistry,” said Adam Muellerweiss, Clarios chief sustainability officer. “This DOE-enabled effort contributes to the goal of building a more stable, secure and sustainable supply chain for the ever-increasing electrical needs of today’s and tomorrow’s vehicles.”
