Clarios selected by U.S. Dept. of Energy for public-private partnership project

Clarios has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to participate in a public-private project, working alongside the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL).

Clarios has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to participate in a public-private project, working alongside the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL). The project will address lithium-ion manufacturing efficiency challenges for advanced battery materials and cell production. It will also target to reduce production costs, enhance performance of electrodes and advance the adoption of highly electrified vehicles throughout the United States.


The Clarios lithium-ion research team and the Meadowbrook Lithium-ion facility in Holland, Michigan will work closely with other industry innovators like Amplitude (a high-power laser system manufacturer) and Feasible (an acoustic system manufacturer), from prototyping to pilot testing.


“This project represents a significant step toward the advancement of lithium-ion manufacturing processes by increasing energy density and lowering costs for U.S. domestic battery supply. We are pleased to work together with NREL to develop a creative approach to complete this research utilizing our lithium-ion manufacturing capability. It is a remarkable accomplishment of the entire team to foster collaboration across companies and create a strong program together,” said Perry Wyatt, vice president, Lithium-ion Products.


“[The] DOE’s investments under this opportunity will help accelerate the scientific breakthroughs needed to strengthen U.S. economic leadership in battery manufacturing,” said Daniel R. Simmons, Assistant Secretary for DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE).


This funding opportunity is part of the Energy Storage Grand Challenge, a DOE-wide effort to create and sustain global leadership in energy storage utilization and exports, with a secure domestic manufacturing supply chain that does not depend on foreign sources of critical materials.
