Clarios makes battery history: 100 million AGM batteries produced in Zwickau, Germany
What began more than 120 years ago as a regional battery manufacturing operation has evolved into a key enabler of modern mobility: At our Clarios plant in Zwickau, Germany, the 100-millionth AGM battery has rolled off the production line. This milestone marks a remarkable production achievement.
To celebrate this moment, employees were joined by guests from politics, business, and the media highlighting the importance of the site for Clarios, the city of Zwickau and the State of Saxony in eastern Germany. As Plant Manager Kai Mille puts it: “100 million AGM batteries from Zwickau – this is much more than a number; it’s a testament to a success story.”
Zwickau plays an important role within Clarios production network in Central Europe. The plant stands for performance, quality, and engineering expertise “Made in Germany.” Our AGM batteries are built for the increasing demands of modern vehicles improving fuel efficiency, powering advanced features, and delivering reliable performance for start/stop systems, electrified platforms, and safety technologies - enhancing energy recovery, extending product life, and improving overall reliability. Today, around 550 employees contribute to the site’s ongoing success, making it a key industrial employer in the region. A particular highlight was the symbolic handover of the 100-millionth battery, signed by Michael Kretschmer, Prime Minister of Saxony, and Werner Benade, President of Clarios EMEA.
Looking ahead, Clarios is strengthening its production network in Central Europe and Zwickau site is benefiting strongly: Following the acquisition of former Ecobat recycling operations, recycled lead from the nearby site in Freiberg will be used directly in battery production in Zwickau. This close collaboration between sites strengthens Clarios’ circular economy while driving sustainable supply security and the recycling of critical materials.
Through continuous investment in modernization and expansion, Clarios is further strengthening the Zwickau plant. The site stands for high-quality production and demonstrates the strength of Clarios’ European production network - today and in the future.
